Full Day Drakensberg World Heritage Tour
Visit Giant’s Castle in the central Drakensberg Mountains and set off on a leisurely 3km round hike to the site of the caves adorned with enigmatic Bushman’s paintings to discover the magical legacy left behind by the Bushmen, which is followed by lunch. The silhouette of the Giant’s Castle mountain escarpment resembles the profile of a sleeping giant, hence the name! Look out for the mighty Eland here as well as the Lammergeier, a rare bearded vulture.
The Drakensberg is a pristine and tranquil place to enjoy the peace of nature and fresh, clean air while you admire the scenery that will take your breath away and make you just want to pause and take all the perfection and simplicity of nature in.
The Drakensberg Mountains are a World Heritage Site in western KwaZulu-Natal, on the border with the “Mountain Kingdom” of Lesotho. The Drakensberg describes the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment, which encloses the central Southern African plateau. It is in the Drakensberg that the Great Escarpment is at its highest – 2 000 to 3 000m. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park holds the richest collection of San rock paintings in Africa and it is where you’ll find the highest mountain range in South Africa.
Drakensberge” is Afrikaans for “dragon mountains”, as early settlers to the area thought it resembled a dragon's back, and so-called it “Drakensberge”. In Zulu the range is called “uKhahlam ba”, which means “barrier of spears”, which makes sense when you look at the dramatic basalt buttresses. Our return to Durban is via the charming Midlands Meander Route with its many art, craft and farmer’s markets and via a visit to the Nelson Mandela Capture site, a historically significant moment in South African history and now commemorated with a world-class sculpture, in memory of Nelson Mandela and his heroic role in the struggle against Apartheid.
